Roger Huang is an entrepreneur working on his next project, and advise several other growth. This post originally appeared on the code (Love).
In Amazonian forests, wildlife presenter Charlie Hamilton Jones was looking to make a statement. He went and bought a parcel of Amazonian fauna, seeking to protect for generations.
A new era of tech events began
We're back in New York in November for the 4th edition of our technology event focused on growth.
Instead, he wound up buying a plantation of cocaine. The most dangerous in the region, owned by the "most dangerous family."
When he went to confront drug traffickers, it was a surprise. Far from being armed to the murderers teeth, they were hopelessly helpless. Charlie had always demonized those who had spoiled his valuable forests. Now he saw that they did what they had to do to survive
they implored him to " pay them so they would not do it. "
The history of the 20th century was the rise of private incentives to a quasi-religion. Capitalism has won the battle of isms, and reign to date. Credited to lift billions out of poverty, on March private capital appeared to be a matter of fate.
Now that the story has shifted to the next chapter, it is clear that there are many problems with rising private incentives above social needs. From climate change to political and economic chaos, the world seems to go from crisis to crisis, with no end in sight.
There is a feeling that many systems are broken, and there must be a change. But where it comes started?
What can be done starting with the digital communities build the future. These startups have reached such an impact that even in the material economy of the past, they are worth billions of dollars. They can and should be a force for change.
What does it change for startups rather than adapt to society?
1. Define New Measures
GDP reward any bottlenecks to oil spills. It is the rough way to account for innovation: it captures the benefits that can be captured in private social well
.This leads to whole societies obstructing access to social goods to derive private benefit: LinkedIn has built an entire empire on restricting valuable information away from those who need it, such as
.sales or users are the best way to measure growth, but for startups avant-garde, a measure of the social impact should be implemented as a key performance indicator: from the number of people who are able to learn something new about a EdTech platform, the number of trees saved on a platform of communications.
The socially oriented investors such as Omidyar Network and the nonprofit arm of Y Combinator notice. Ultimately, the social value will spread like a key measure not only for intrinsic reasons, but also to the extrinsic as well.
The technology that helps to empower and enable others is extremely powerful, for all the right reasons. The communities that develop from this technology can generate such powerful progress that huge amounts of money will flow regardless :. We saw this with Linux Red Hat spawning society $ 10 billion +
2. Think long term
Startups can not just think about short-term growth curves. In order to create a sustainable society in the long run startups must think about the future.
Instead of focusing only on short-term profit, Salman Khan of Khan Academy has put himself on record as saying that the profit motive night effectively its mission of creating sustainable value long term.
This is why Khan Academy was created with a non-profit model., To create social value, it must, unhindered by shareholders demanding the company constantly sacrifice now for some numbers
the major startups of the future will be able to pursue social objectives without much thought to particular objectives.
They are going to build for centuries rather than building for years.
3. Try to change behavior, not adapt
Respected venture capital Chris Dixon argued convincingly that the best startup ideas are not the the cooler: these are old ideas left around that were pursued with ambition by new startups that sought to control all aspects of the value chain.
From Uber, Tesla at Warby Parker, these startups drowned their digital culture in all aspects of the value chain. They challenged entrenched traditional holders forehead fundamentally changing user behavior.
People using Uber and Airbnb would be difficult to return to the traditional way to hail a cab, or take a hotel. This is because these startups full stack chose to change the behavior of the user rather than adapt.
Rather than creating an application to make it easier to book a hotel, Airbnb has redefined the hospitality industry by making it a part of the sharing economy. It enabled you and me to rent unoccupied rooms each other, and to be hosted by those who have extra space in the city-to-city, creating play disturbances change user behavior.
Airbnb is now worth $ 10 billion.
digital startups seeking to control all aspects of the value chain to achieve material success. They are at the forefront of changing the way humans interact with each other and change the world around them.
4. Embrace open data and open source
I gave a lecture once on the importance of adopting software principles to a biotechnology industry capital intensive. Because the rules of the new knowledge economy, the most important cost to growing businesses are the spirit qualified manufacturers.
One of the cardinal rules of software engineering is "DRY" -Do Repeat Yourself. Taken at a global level, this means that if someone has already built, you should not build it again.
The lean philosophy that forms the basis of modern commissioning requires. Lean means not wasting and develop something in a proprietary silo when others do the same thing is a waste.
When the most expensive cost is that brilliant minds, you can not afford to waste the work on solutions that have already been built.
The next data-driven startups requires the best available data. Embracing open data sources ensures that everyone can get the data they need to inform the choices they must make.
Startups seeking to change the world should adopt open source and open data as powerful leverage points in their David against Goliath. Sagas, following the example of Elon Musk. In doing so, they build the health of the open movement, and enhance the sharing of the default of the digital economy.
5. Nourish building a culture
Brian Chesky, Airbnb founder, made a very good observation on the importance of culture: it eliminates the need for business process if everyone in the team has an idea of what exactly they need to do. Instead of high-touch, and micro-management, a team with a good culture will automatically organize themselves to achieve results.
The process is a proxy to ensure your people are aligned. However, if you build a culture of construction, you will not need as many processes, and your brightest minds will be free to solve any problems they see.
If they are all aligned with the long-term thinking, social impact, ambition to change behavior, and open principles, there is no need for you to manage a team to create a positive private and social impact: all you have to do is to provide the end vision.
I heard some of the guys behind Google Ventures talk about what propelled Google's success: enable young minds to kiss without worrying too much latitude. The culture was put to help young children to experiment and grow, infusing Google with a set of new ideas on a daily basis, and the room to see where these ideas were.
Foster a culture where tinkering with good ideas to see them become great projects is the norm-which can only help reinforce a start-up. It will change the way it himself, and especially the way the boot shapes other perceives.
The challenges surrounding the company seem to many, sometimes too much to overcome. We must not despair. Locked in each start is the potential to really change the world. For best.
By defining new measures, think long term, seeking to change user behavior, embracing openness and building a culture around these values, start-up will be the change they want to see in the world.
